just like me, by Anoushay Dar

Warwick Studio, as part of the Warwick Student Arts Festival (WSAF)

Writer.

just like me, was written as part of a Playwrighting module, encouraging students to try new writing techniques, going outside of your usual writing comfort zone, which for me, was poetry.

It follows three characters: Nora, Sam, Deb.

This play had its beginnings looking at relationships and communication. How we are taught sexual health seemed to me linked to how we build and nurture relationships. Further exploring the play and within discussions, I felt it had more questions about what young adults take from sex education, and even media, and how they implicate that into their relationships. After working on the text a bit more, I realised we tend to neglect the fact that just because we have communication, it does not necessarily mean understanding.

Many of the scenes are full of game-playing (literally) and the dialogue is quick yet the gaps allow for thought and spaces to breathe. The scenes jump between different states, and I hope this gives readers, as well as performers, a space to enjoy themselves and ultimately question the relationships these characters have, not just with each other but also with themselves.

During this script-in-hand rehearsed reading, I had also accumulated lots of feedback via a post reading Q&A and feedback form. This was a fruitful reading and I hope to develop this play further.
