Bathtub, by Chloe Britain

April 2024 - May 2025

Warwick Studio

Director.

A story beginning from a small discussion in a café, to a fully fledged articulation of those thoughts in a final performance.

Chloe approached me to direct this piece that she had begun writing, after I had worked with her as Assistant Director on Hedda Gabler, at the Warwick Arts Centre, where she played Hedda.

Bathtub follows one character, Ro, who then multi-rolls other characters as she walks audiences through her mind whilst in her bathroom. Ro travels through space and time within this one location, which is something that started off as a challenge, but by the end I had absolutely loved doing.

I worked with Chloe on devising movement and researching how actors may multi-roll many characters at once. Key shows we looked to were Andrew Scott’s Vanya, and Fleabag, by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. I noticed how Scott would remain in one character’s body whilst having the voice of another, perhaps to show how they are talking to one another. This proved a useful practice for Chloe, as she was able to fluidly switch between characters, and even scenes.

This process consisted of many R&Ds with friends, ourselves, many conversations, even a concept photoshoot!

After the 2-day performance we received lots of feedback from audience members and even got invited to interview for an online journal.
